Why choose Cambridge IGCSE?

Every parent or guardian wants their children to have all the skills and competencies necessary to face new educational challenges as they head towards their final years of high school. In that respect, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (Cambridge IGCSE) is the world’s most popular international qualification designed to prepare 14- to 16-year-old students to further their studies and help them get wherever they want to go career-wise.

Drawing on knowledge from our IB Business Management HL teacher and IGCSE Coordinator, Alexa Hendrix, we would like to share how and why the Cambridge IGCSE is revolutionizing our curriculum in Upper School, and what benefits it brings to the whole Peterson community.

What is the IGCSE?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education is a two-year content-rich program for 9th and 10th-grade students, offered in more than 4,800 schools in more than 160 countries worldwide. Students choose from 70 subjects in any combination to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in subject content, intellectual inquiry, cultural awareness, and responsiveness to change, while working and communicating in English.  At the end of the two-year period, students undertake relevant externally-assessed examinations to earn the international qualification of the subjects they certify.

What advantages does IGCSE bring to the Peterson community?

Cambridge IGCSE strengthens the Peterson curriculum in an extraordinary way. It is designed to prepare students for further study and future careers, as it helps them develop skills in creative thinking, inquiry, and problem solving, which are essential to excel in international studies such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, the natural continuation of the IGCSE program.

In addition, Cambridge IGCSE is a period for students to realize what they want to do in the future. It provides them with the opportunity to choose and experience courses that they are passionate about early in life. This strengthens their path of becoming independent learners and critical thinkers, while also encouraging them to take responsibility for their own education.

How does IGCSE prepare students for international studies?

Cambridge IGCSE subjects are widely recognized by leading universities, further education institutions and employers around the world as evidence of academic achievement and English language proficiency. Many universities require a combination of Cambridge International A Levels and Cambridge IGCSEs to meet their entry requirements. For example, leading US and Canadian universities require Cambridge International AS & A Levels, but some American and Canadian universities will accept students with Cambridge IGCSEs at grade C or above.  In the UK, Cambridge IGCSE is accepted as equivalent to GCSE.

The IGCSE curriculum taught by our formidable teachers here at the Peterson Schools, therefore, represents an excellent and highly-regarded pathway to success for our students. With this new addition to our education program, we demonstrate once more that we are at the forefront of academic development, always aiming to offer the best programs to our students and fulfill our mission: to be a community that inspires passion for learning and life.
